What counts as a dental emergency
Severe or worsening toothache, facial swelling, a knocked out or badly broken tooth, bleeding that will not stop, or trauma from sport or a fall. If you are unsure, call anyway. Two minutes on the phone with our team beats an evening of guessing, and we would rather see a false alarm than a preventable disaster.
A knocked out tooth is a race
Time matters more than anything else. Pick the tooth up by the crown, never the root. If it is clean, try to place it gently back in the socket and bite on soft cloth. If you cannot, drop it in milk, not water, and call us on the way. Reimplanting within about 30 to 60 minutes gives the best chance of saving the tooth.
While you get to us
For toothache, cold water sips and over the counter pain relief taken as directed can help. Do not put aspirin against the gum, it burns tissue. For swelling, a cold compress outside the cheek. For a broken tooth, save any fragments in milk. And if you ever have facial swelling affecting your breathing or swallowing, that is a hospital emergency department situation, not a dental one.
